Caspe is a small town 70 miles (100 km)
south of ZARAGOZA in the province of ARAGON. It is situated approximately the
central point of the Mar De Aragon this is a lake created by the damming of
the river Ebro. The lake follows the previous river course for about 70 miles
(100km) up to a km wide in places. Fishing The lake has not had the
intensified fishing or pollution experienced beyond the dam at Mequineza. Most
“Brits” that have experienced “Ebro fishing” have been fishing in the lower
parts in the province of Catalonia, these areas have been very popular for the
past decade especially with the French, Germans and Dutch, and some of these
groups are now trying ARAGON as a better alternative.
Catfish, Carp, Zander and Bass are the
most popular fish caught on the lake. Due to its extensive area and mainly
only locals fishing the lake is not commercialised, this area is not
overfished and the fish are not tackle shy.
Recently there have been catches of
catfish in excess of 100lbs and I have seen a photograph of a 3 metre over
200lb catfish caught on the lake.
As we get established our photo gallery
will show the results. The lake offers stunning views as the lake meanders
through small ravines. There are a variety of beautiful birds in the area such
as the hoopoe, bee-eaters, golden orioles, shrikes, egrets and storks, birds
of prey can be seen including the griffon vulture and eagles. The town of
Caspe is a 5 minute drive or a 30 minute walk, it has numerous tapas bars and
restaurants very friendly people, although as a rural community English
speakers are a rarity. Fiestas are quite common throughout the year and go on
for days and nights up to the early hours.
